Introduction to editing

"The gloaming"

Editing is a process of selecting different shots and putting them together to tell a story. There are different techniques you can use to tell a story, for example, you could use elliptical editing which is making screen time shorter than story time to cut out unnecessary actions. If you want to show the surroundings of the character to the viewers you could use a long shot. To make a scene more intense or dramatic you could add some music. That's called non-diagetic sound, which is a sound that the characters in the film can't hear. One of the most effective techniques in editing is condensing shots to save time by simply making connections.

"Hustle"

To establish a clear location and introduce some characters, an overhead establishing shot is necessary as it shows the position of the characters and their locations. If you want to create a scene with 2 characters talking to each other, it is highly suggested that you use the Shot-Reversed-Shot as it cuts in and out of 2 people talking and suggests that those characters are talking to each other. If you want to make it more clearer that the 2 characters are talking to each you gotta make sure that their eye-line is matching to each other. So if 1 person is standing and the other is sitting, the person whos standing should be looking down and off camera while the sitting person should look up and off camera. While discussing the plan in one of the scenes in "hustler" the camera cuts in and out of all the characters to show their reactions to every bit of the news. After the plan it cuts to a new location using the effect called 'wipe' which establishes a new time and place. They also use quick cuts which keeps the audience on their toes due to the face pace of the sequence.
