D.W. Griffith

David W. Graffith is known and respected by the whole filming community for all the innovative editing techniques he developed throughout his filming career. Some of the editing methods he created are cross cutting, close ups, seamless editing and a lot more creative shots. The techniques he developed are still being used in this day and age; he made a major impact on the editing scene, without him, who knows what kind of editing techniques we would be using right now. His most well known films are The great train robbery and The life of a fireman where he revolutionized editing as we know it. In the Life of a fireman, he used cross cutting for the first time, he switched from the victim of a fire to the fireman to increase the tension to make the viewer worry about the victim, since the audience of that era were not aware of such unusual edits.
A lot of directors and editors have used his techniques ever since he developed them. One very well known and extremely popular technique to use during filming is cutting during action from a wide angle shot to a close up and making the whole transition look very smooth. Since it's so smooth, no one every notices or appreciates it.
David Llewelyn Wark Griffith will forever be remembered as the person who revolutionized the life of editing.
